Designing a Peace Curriculum for Your School
During this hands-on in-service Ms.Haskins will provide a framework for a peace curriculum and then
work with teachers and staff to match activities and lessons resulting in a curriculum that will be a
living, evolving document tailored specifically for your school.  Your curriculum may include on or
more of these components:  1) inner peace, 2) peace in a classroom community, 3) global/universal
peace, and 4) peace in nature.

This in-service works well with teachers working with different age levels, because while the
framework remains consistent throughout, the activities that are matched to each component are
specific to each “grade level.

Why We Teach: The Lessons Maria Taught Us
An inspiring look at the fundamentals that lie at the heart of Dr. Montessori’s life work:
change how we think about and work with children and we change the world.
We’ll look with a fresh perspective on the life and work of this groundbreaking woman and review
the courageous and passionate calls she made to transform how we educate children. Montessori’s
message was prophetic, and as relevant today as it was when she first began her work.  Inspirational.

Nurturing the Teacher: Finding Peace and Joy Through a Well-Tended Inner Life
Dr. Montessori recognized the importance of preparing the teacher spiritually for her work with
children. This interactive workshop is perfect for inspiring your staff at the start of the school year.
Non-religious in nature, participants will explore ways to feel whole, balanced, and centered as they
move through the school year. Spiritual health includes experiences in stillness and silence, mindful
living, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion and finding meaning and purpose in each day.

Building Supportive School Communities: How We Work Together
Whenever we gather to share information, discuss issues, and communicate ideas, we have an
opportunity to engage in deep listening, authentic affirming of others, and non-judgmental
communications. You don’t need a formal program or step-by-step procedures to build caring,
respectful school communities if you integrate these simple, but powerful ideas and strategies for
transforming how we communicate with others in the hallways and in organizational meetings.

Teaching for Peace: Cultivating Inner Peace
Examine activities and experiences that cultivate inner peace by evoking an awareness of the inner
self, cultivating stillness & silence, concentration & attention, mindfulness, and gratitude.

Teaching for Peace: Fostering Peace in a Classroom Community
Explores activities for building caring, compassionate relationships through community building using
goodness seeking & affirmation of others, celebration & ceremony, compassion, forgiveness, respectful
language, and conflict resolution.

Using Picture Books to Teach For Peace
Peace themed picture books can have a tremendous impact on children and can be a starting point
for important discussions and activities that help children understand the many ways of being
peaceful inside themselves, among friends, across cultures, and in nature.

Using Writing Activities to Nurture the Spirit in the Elementary Classroom
How can we help children understand their spiritual self?  What exercises and activities can we
provide that aid children in accessing creativity energy, wisdom, compassion and inner strength?  In
this workshop we will engage in and explore writing activities for the elementary classroom that
stimulate self-understanding, spiritual memories, and the Inner Self.
